IM-105  07/06/00  DENTAL INSURANCE PREMIUMS

SUBJECT:
DENTAL INSURANCE PREMIUMS

DISCUSSION:
Premiums paid to insurance companies for dental insurance are an allowable medical deduction for Nursing Home surplus and Medical Assistance spenddown determinations.  Budget the monthly premium as a deduction in the month the premium is due.

Currently, several insurance companies are soliciting nursing home residents to purchase dental insurance.  These companies may or may not use Medicaid providers to provide the dental care.

Some companies have requested written verification from DFS personnel regarding this medical deduction.  The agency does not endorse any of the insurance plans.  DFS personnel should not issue written statements regarding these insurance policies.

If a claimant purchases dental insurance allow the premium payments as a medical deduction in the eligibility determination.  Report the claimant's insurance coverage to the Third Party Liability Unit (TPL) in the normal manner.
