"EMPLOYERS CONNECTING EMPLOYEES TO BENEFITS FOR LOW INCOME WORKING FAMILIES"

DISCUSSION:
It is important that employers understand what is available to help low income workers make more money, get help with family health coverage and child care at no additional cost to the employer.  The Department of Social Services along with the Southern Institute on Children and Families has produced a brochure for employers explaining services which may be available to working families, entitled "Employers Connecting Employees To Benefits For Low Income Working Families".

This colorful brochure is to be given to employers in your community to help them understand benefits that may help them hire and retain workers.  It explains how these benefits help families and employers as a family transitions off of public assistance.  The following benefits are highlighted:

  •  MC+
  •  Child Care assistance
  •  Earned Income Credit (EIC)
  •  Food assistance
  •  Wage Supplementation
  •  WOTC
  •  Direct Job Placement
There is a helpful section with suggestions on actions employers can take to help low income families avail themselves of these benefits.  One suggestion is to post information on MC+, EIC, food assistance and available child care assistance in employee break rooms, rest rooms and on bulletin boards.  At the time the brochures are being made available to employers, you may also want to supply them with informational materials regarding DFS programs.

Provide this brochure to help employers understand what is available to assist their employees, as well as brochures and information on MC+, childcare, Food Stamps and the EIC.

An initial supply of the brochure has been sent to all county offices.  Additional supplies of these brochures may be obtained from the warehouse through normal procedures.
