IM-25  02/01/00  EMPLOYMENT WITH THE CENSUS BUREAU

SUBJECT:
EMPLOYMENT WITH THE CENSUS BUREAU

DISCUSSION:
The Census Bureau expects to hire approximately 9,000 people in Missouri for Census 2000.  Temporary Assistance recipients, Work First Applicants and recipients in the Direct Job Placement Program could benefit from this employment.

Most census workers will be employed from April to June in the year 2000 and conduct follow-up enumeration for households where census questionnaires were not returned.  Workers will receive a competitive hourly wage (based on the geographic area of $6.00 to $14.00 per hour).  They will be paid to attend training and reimbursed for mileage costs.  Whenever possible, the Census Bureau is striving to place workers in the neighborhoods where they live.  The goal is to hire a representative work force that is reflective of the community.

The toll-free telephone number to call for information about census jobs is 888-325-7733.  Hiring will begin the end of February through March.  Give this number to your recipients to find out when and where to report for a testing and application session.

The written test (multiple choice) consists of 28 questions designed to measure the skills, abilities, and knowledge required to perform a variety of census jobs.  There are five parts to the 30-minute test:  reading, clerical, numerical, evaluative, and organizational skills.  To receive veterans preference for hiring purposes, applicants must bring a DD-214, Armed Forces Service Record, or equivalent to the testing site for proof of qualifying service.  In areas with large Spanish-speaking populations, the test may be given in Spanish.  Sample test questions, a test preparation guide, and a practice test are available.  This information is available by calling 888-325-7733 or through the internet at http://www.census.gov/jobs2000/www/test.html.

This income is to be counted as earned income on the Temporary Assistance, Food Stamp, Child Care, Medical Assistance and Energy Assistance budgets.
