IM-38  03/02/00  "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS" PUBLICATION

"KNOW YOUR RIGHTS" PUBLICATION PROVIDED BY MISSOURI OFFICE OF ATTORNEY GENERAL
 
DISCUSSION:
The Missouri Office of Attorney General has issued the "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS" publication as a packet of consumer educational material.  It is designed to inform and educate individuals about their rights and responsibilities as consumers.  It focuses on day-to-day issues such as housing, credit, and employment where informed decisions not only help individuals live better, but also help them build a better future for their families.

The publication includes a "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS" workbook, facilitators guide, and a VHS videotape.  Subjects included are:

  •  Avoid landlord-tenant disputes,
  •  Shop for Used Cars,
  •  Handle Mail, Phone, and Other Solicitations,
  •  Handle Credit Card and Other Loans,
  •  Separate Fact From Fraud, and
  •  Take Action, Resolve Disputes.
The informative workbook can be shared with individuals requesting any program assistance from Division of Family Services.  It is recommended that the workbook be provided to individuals at application, during orientation, assessment, or at any interim contact when the individual can benefit from this information.  The workbook can also be made available in the Division of Family Services' waiting room and resource area of county offices.  The videotape can be used in the waiting room of county offices, during orientations, and at Life Skills Classes.

An initial distribution of the workbook is being sent to each county office.  Order an additional supply of workbooks through normal supply procedures.  A facilitators guide and a VHS videotape will be supplied to each county office through Area Administration.
 
NECESSARY ACTION:
  • Review this memorandum with appropriate staff.

  • Begin using the "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS" publication immediately.

    •  
  • Provide "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS" workbook to individuals having contact with DFS whenever deemed appropriate.
