"JUMP START YOUR CAREER" Booklet
 
DISCUSSION:
"JUMP START YOUR CAREER" is published by Curtis & Associates, Inc. Employment Communication Consultants. This interactive booklet was designed to motivate job seekers to take charge of their lives and careers.  It is now available to Division of Family Services' staff to assist individuals in Job Search.

It is recommended that the booklet be provided to individuals while in Job Readiness or at the beginning of Job Search.

The "JUMP START YOUR CAREER" booklet will help individuals:

  • Know their strengths,
  • Identify job categories that interest them,
  • Develop a network,
  • Complete a master application,
  • Talk to employers on the phone and in person, 
  • Make a good impression in an interview, and
  • Begin thinking about job advancement strategies.
DFS staff should:
  • Assist the individual in completing the booklet, if needed,
  • Help the individual identify their marketable strengths,
  • Emphasize the importance of developing a personal network,
  • Explain that 75% of jobs are found using informal job search methods,
  • Emphasize the importance of having a neat and complete master application, and
  • Explain the difference between getting a job and starting a career.
An initial distribution of the booklet is being sent to each county office.  Order an additional supply of booklets through normal supply procedures.
 
NECESSARY ACTION:
  • Review this memorandum with appropriate staff.

  • Begin using the "JUMP START YOUR CAREER" immediately.

  •  
  • Provide "JUMP START YOUR CAREER" booklets to individuals in Job Readiness or at the beginning of Job Search.
