IM-65  3/29/01 CORRECTION TO CHAFEE FOSTER CARE INDEPENDENCE PROGRAM

SUBJECT:
CORRECTION TO CHAFEE FOSTER CARE INDEPENDENCE PROGRAM

DISCUSSION:
Memorandum IM-#191 (December 27, 2000) contains incorrect information concerning the allowable expenditures under the John H. Chafee Foster Care Independence Program (CFCIP) Crisis Intervention Funds.  This memo stated that the funds could pay for health related services for youth who left Out-of-Home care at age eighteen (18) or after and have not yet reached their twenty-first birthday (21).  This is a service that cannot be paid by CFCIP Crisis Intervention Funds.

All IM programs should be explored before using the CFCIP Crisis Intervention Funds.  These funds can be used with any of the supportive services that the IM programs offer.

Each county office should devise a referral system for the Income Maintenance staff and Children Services staff to collaborate on how to ensure maximum supports for these youth.

NECESSARY ACTION:
  •  Review this memorandum with all appropriate staff.
  • Eliminate referrals for health related services for the youth that have aged out of foster care.

  •
  • Continue devising a referral process in each county from Income Maintenance staff to Children Service staff.
