DISCUSSION:
The Food Stamp eligibility unit (EU) consists of one or more persons who live in the same household and purchase and prepare food together for home consumption. Refer to Food Stamp Manual section 1105.015.04.15 Mandatory Eligibility Unit Groups.
The Food and Nutrition Service prohibits married couples who live together from claiming to be separate households for Food Stamps. All couples who are living together and state they are legally married must be included in one Food Stamp EU. Accept an applicant’s statement of marital status. Enter Y in the purchase and prepare (PUR/PRE) field of the Application Detail screen in FAMIS
NECESSARY ACTION:
- Review this memorandum with appropriate staff.
- When a couple declares they are legally married, include them in one Food Stamp EU.
