IM-142  11/06/02  EBT CASH ACCESSES THROUGH
THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE (USPS)

SUBJECT:
EBT CASH ACCESSES THROUGH THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE (USPS)
DISCUSSION:
As a customer service initiative the United States Postal Service (USPS) plans to begin accepting EBT cards in the first quarter 2003.  USPS will begin downloading the new EBT capable software in mid-November.  After testing, downloads will continue to all 33,000 Post Offices nationwide.  These downloads are anticipated to be completed to all 67,000 credit card terminals by late January 2003.

The USPS will offer cash back with an EBT purchase as is currently offered with on-line debit card purchases.  USPS will allow customers to withdraw up to $50 cash, in $10 increments, from their EBT account when purchasing postal products and services with an EBT card.

NECESSARY ACTION:
  • Review this memorandum with appropriate staff.
  • Inform participants that cash may be accessed at the USPS by late January 2003.
