When a claim is entered into CARS, the process to collect the overpaid amount begins.
The household receives a demand letter telling them the:
- SNAP claim balance,
- repayment procedures,
- hearing rights, and
- compromise option for some claims.
After the demand letter is generated, the household does not receive another notice regarding the SNAP claim balance or hearing rights on this specific claim.
If the debtor wishes to enter into a repayment agreement, refer them to the Claims and Restitution Unit at 573-751-3004.
Collections are made against only one household with at least one responsible debtor for a single claim when responsible claim members reside in multiple SNAP households.
Note: If a husband and wife, who are responsible household members for a single claim, later separate SNAP and become two separate SNAP households. SNAP recoupment would alternate each month for each responsible household member.
