SUBJECT:

VERIFICATION OF MEDICAL EXPENSES

FOOD STAMP MANUAL UPDATE: 1102.015.15

DISCUSSION:

FSD has contracted with The Rushmore Group to conduct a large case reading activity. The Rushmore Group is staffed with former state employees who are very well versed in Food Stamp Program policies and procedures. One element of the review process is to identify error prone policies and to determine that Food Stamp Program policy and procedures are clearly communicated.

An error prone policy has been identified regarding verification of medical expenses prior to certification for food stamp benefits. Medical expense can only be allowed for elderly/disabled EU members when the expense exceeds $35. When the EU claims allowable medical expense verify the medical expense that the EU has to determine whether the expense exceeds $35. Explore all expenses including transportation for medical care.

Food Stamp Manual Section 1102.015.15 has been updated to reflect this change.
